Common causes include:

  • Trauma
  • Ill-fitting footwear

Dependant on the cause of your ingrown nail, treatment may include the surgical removal of the offending nail section, or conservatively where you may be required to attend a number of appointments as a long term treatment option.

If you require nail surgery it is performed under local anaesthetic in our clinic, does not require stitches, post-op pain is usually minimal and most people can return to normal (light) activities within a few days.

Frequently Asked Questions

Ingrown Nails & Nail Surgery

What are ingrown nails, and how are they treated?

Ingrown nails occur when the edges of the nail curve and grow into the surrounding skin, leading to pain, swelling, and potential infection. Our skilled Podiatrists specialize in diagnosing and treating ingrown nails. Depending on the severity, treatment options can range from conservative measures like proper nail trimming techniques and warm soaks to minor surgical procedures that provide lasting relief.

When is nail surgery recommended for ingrown nails?

Nail surgery is recommended when conservative treatments fail to provide relief or if the ingrown nail becomes a recurrent issue. This minor surgical procedure involves removing a portion of the ingrown nail to alleviate pain and prevent further complications. Our experienced Podiatrists assess each case individually and recommend the most suitable treatment approach to ensure your comfort and optimal recovery.

What can I expect during and after ingrown nail surgery?

During ingrown nail surgery, you'll receive a local anaesthetic to numb the area, ensuring your comfort throughout the procedure. The ingrown portion of the nail is carefully removed, and any underlying infection is addressed. Post surgery, you might experience mild discomfort and receive aftercare instructions to ensure proper healing. Our dedicated team will guide you through each step, ensuring a smooth recovery and the best possible outcome for your foot health.
